ICE STUPA are towering mounds of frozen melt water that serve as a lifeline to farmers in the highland deserts of Ladakh in the Himalayas. As glaciers recede around the world, remote communities are at the frontlines of water scarcity and food insecurity. The ICE STUPA innovation of Sonam Wangchuk - a local monk, educator, engineer, and founder of the institute SECMOL, provides some hope to mitigating effects of changing climate and risks.
This November 1st-7th 2024, Nishant Tiku, one of the technical leaders of the ICE STUPA project will be visiting Folk Tree Lodge at Bragg Creek to start exploring the possibility of bringing ICE STUPA innovation and inspiration to communities in Alberta.
Next year, 2025 is the UN Year of the Glaciers.
Together with the United Nations University Water Hub at the University of Calgary, the SPA hopes to facilitate and contribute to hopeful and inspiring climate action in Calgary and many other mountain communities in the world.
