The Pelvis Liberation Project No.1 SOCA & Twerkshop
Thu, Aug 08
|Decidedly Jazz Danceworks
The human pelvis is at the nexus of forces and as such has been valued as "sacred" in many world cultures and traditions. The Pelvic Liberation Project aims to deliver more than pelvic region "movement training and activation" but also a sense of socio+cultural exchange and community.

About the event
As part of S.P.A. Aqua Prima's advocacy to "embody freedom" and "renewable energy", we are partnering with several dance studios to bring a variety of socio-cultural dance workshops!
This way, we can continue to provide care and "therapeutic exercises", and also offer a deeper sense of connection and freedom, with diverse cultural communities around the world.
We begin with the P E L V I S (region) -- a nexus of forces in the human body. Not only is the pelvic girdle an intersection of powerful muscles to keep us upright, it houses perhaps, the most compelling system in our biology: the reproductive system.
In many, if not all world cultures and traditions, the pelvic region is deemed sacred, nurturing, enigmatic, and primal, ALL at the same time!
In this first installation of the Pelvis Liberation Project (Women's class), we are presenting SOCA (Soul of Calypso), a dance form with origins and symbolism from Afro Caribbean (socio-cultural & political) freedom movements, fusion & resistance.
Known for powerful and fun pelvic movements e.g. "Twerk," "Wobble" and "Wine", SOCA dance will re-connect us with often weakened muscles of the core, the glutes, the hamstrings; and get us re-acquainted with our divine feminine fierceness!
The dance workshop will be lead by De-Ann Weekes, an award winning choreographer from Trinidad and Tobago, and Founder of DRSD Calgary: http://drsdcalgary.ca/
Join us as we power through FUN hip rotations, core activation, gluteal muscle control & release with beats and rhythms of Afro Caribbean festival music!
